  10. We would like to thank you for your purchase. It is our goal to
  11. make you a happy and satisfied customer, so we have included
  12. here in this file some solutions to problems you may encounter.

  14. This file contains information that was not available at the
  15. time the on-disc documentation was prepared, as well as other
  16. important information to help you successfully use this product.
  17. If you are uncertain how to make a recommended change, please
  18. refer to the user's guides that came with Windows and/or your
  19. computer system.

  33. A. Disk Compression
  34.  
  35. If you are using a disk compression utility, the available hard
  36. disk space reported by the installation program might not be
  37. accurate. Disk compression utilities can only ESTIMATE
  38. available hard disk space. If the installation process is not
  39. successful, you may need to free additional hard disk space by
  40. removing unneeded files or applications from your hard drive.
  41.  
  42. B. Network Installation
  43.  
  44. This product is designed as a "stand-alone" application and does
  45. not support use by multiple users over a network.
  46.  
  47. C. This program works best with Windows operating in a 386-
  48. enhanced mode with a 10 MB permanent swap file established 
  49. on a non-compressed drive.
  50.  
  51. D. Installation Instructions
  52.  
  53. Compton's suggests you exit all applications before installing
  54. this product. Other programs and drivers running on the
  55. computer could interfere with the installation process.
  56.  
  57. From the Program Manager, open the File menu and select "Run...".
  58. In the "Command Line" box type "X:\SETUP.EXE", replacing the
  59. letter "X" with the actual letter of your CD drive. For example, if 
  60. your CD-ROM drive is drive "D", type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and 
  61. press Enter.
  62.  
  63. Once the program files have been installed, the installation program 
  64. will scan for Video for Windows. If Video for Windows version 1.1
  65.  is already installed on your system, the program will offer you the 
  66. option of starting the program or returning to the Program Manager. 
  67. If Video for Windows is not installed on your system, the installation
  68. program will offer to install it for you. Once Video for Windows
  69. 1.1 is installed, simply open the Comptons group and double-click 
  70. on the Compton's Reference Collection icon.

  72. To exit the installation program without using the mouse, press
  73. the F3 key.

  75. E. Minimum System Requirements
  76.  
  77. The minimum system requirements for this program are:
  78.  
  79. *  A Multimedia PC with 386SX/16MHz or better processor
  80.     (486SX/25MHz recommended)
  81. *  Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later
  82. *  Microsoft CD Extensions 2.2 or later
  83. *  MS-DOS 3.1 or later
  84. *  4MB RAM (8MB recommended)
  85. *  An SVGA graphics card (640x480 with 256 colors) with a
  86.     compatible monitor
  87. *  An MPC-compatible CD-ROM drive (150KB/s sustained
  88.     transfer rate)
  89. *  A SoundBlaster or compatible sound card with general MIDI
  90.     support (Wave table recommended)
  91. *  Stereo speakers or headphones
  92. *  A Microsoft or 100% compatible mouse
  93. *  A printer is optional

  95. II. Troubleshooting
  96. *********************************************************
  97. This product has been successfully tested with a wide variety of
  98. hardware and peripheral equipment. It should be noted, however,
  99. that Microsoft Windows is a "device-independent" operating
  100. system which relies on device drivers to communicate with the
  101. various devices on your system, and, occasionally, issues may
  102. occur with one of these drivers. Conflicts with sound cards,
  103. video displays and printers are often resolved by reconfiguring
  104. or updating the device drivers supplied by the manufacturers.
  105. This product is not designed specifically for compatibility with
  106. any particular hardware item.
  107.  
  108. A.  "General Protection Fault in Module ???.DRV"
  109.  
  110. These error messages are often related to the video driver being
  111. used by Windows. They can often be resolved by changing the
  112. video resolution to 640x480 with 256 colors. 
  113.  
  114. B. "CDR-lOl" or "Not Ready Reading (CD-ROM drive)"
  115.  
  116. Error messages related to the computer's ability to read the CD
  117. can often be resolved by one of the following suggestions:
  118.  
  119.       * Make sure that the CD is clean and free of scratches.
  120.         CDs can be washed in warm water and dish washing liquid.
  121.         Scratched CDs should be replaced.
  122.  
  123.       * Don't cache the CD-ROM drive. If your computer is using
  124.         DOS version 6.20 or later and the SMARTDRV caching
  125.         driver, add a "/U" argument to the line that loads
  126.         SMARTDRV in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The line may appear
  127.         as "C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X /U". For more information on
  128.         SMARTDRV, type "HELP SMARTDRV" at the DOS prompt.

  130.       * Assign twenty buffers to reading the CD. This is done
  131.         by setting the "/M:" argument on the MSCDEX line to 20.
  132.         The line may appear as "C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001
  133.         /M:20". For more information on MSCDEX, type "HELP
  134.         MSCDEX" at the DOS prompt.
  135.  
  136. C. Videos Do Not Play
  137.  
  138. Be sure that Video for Windows is installed. The CD-ROM disc 
  139. includes Video for Windows version 1.1. This can be installed from 
  140. the Program Manager by opening the File menu and selecting "Run...". 
  141. In the "Command Line" box type "X:\VFW11E\SETUP.EXE", where 
  142. X is the letter of your CD-ROM drive, and press Enter.
  143.  
  144. D. Font Problems / Font Error Messages
  145.  
  146. The program requires that certain fonts be present on your system to 
  147. display text correctly. If the program cannot find the fonts it needs, it 
  148. might display strange or illegible characters.
  149.  
  150. To correct this problem, first exit the program. Then, double-click on 
  151. the Control Panel icon located in the Main group on the Windows 
  152. desktop. In the Control Panel, double-click on the Fonts icon. Scroll 
  153. through the "Installed Fonts" list to make sure it includes the following 
  154. fonts:
  155.  
  156. *  Arial (TrueType)
  157. *  MS Sans Serif (VGA res)
  158. *  MS Serif (VGA res)
  159. *  Symbol (TrueType)
  160. *  Times New Roman (TrueType)
  161.  
  162. If any of these fonts is not installed, click on the "Add ..." button and 
  163. open  the "\WINDOWS\SYSTEM" directory on your hard drive.  Select 
  164. the missing fonts and click "OK." Once you've returned to the Fonts 
  165. window, click on the "TrueType ..." button. Click in the check box for
  166. "Enable TrueType Fonts" to place an "X" in it, then click "OK." You 
  167. must re-start Windows for the changes to take effect, so click on the 
  168. "Restart Now" button.
  169.  
  170. If no list of fonts appears in "\WINDOWS\SYSTEM," consult your 
  171. Windows user's guide for assistance in loading Windows fonts.

  173. E. Print outs are missing the last characters from the right edge of 
  174. the page  
  175.  
  176. This is related to the EPS0N LQ-2500/2550 print driver. This 
  177. driver is used by Panasonic, Citizen and others that emulate the 
  178. Epson series of printers. Select the EPS0N LX-810 driver in
  179. Windows, or contact your printer manufacturer for updated drivers.

  182. F. Changing the MIDI Playback Device
  183.  
  184. If you want to change the MIDI device used by the program, click 
  185. on the "Menu" button on the program's path bar, and then click on the 
  186. "Preferences" button. Clicking on the "Setup MIDI Device ..." button 
  187. in the Preferences screen will let you manually select your MIDI device.
